Mathematics at Nendrum College
It would be very difficult to live a reasonably normal life without making use of mathematics of some kind. Mathematics has many practical applications for daily situations: simple arithmetic skills are needed in the home, in the office and in the workplace. A good knowledge of mathematics then is something that is invaluable in adult life.
The aims of the department in teaching mathematics are:
- To train each pupil to recognise pattern.
- To develop an ability and confidence to carry out mathematical skills.
- To help develop an understanding of mathematical concepts.
- To use estimation in order to recognise what is a sensible answer.
- To develop an ability in the use of calculators.
- To develop an ability in the use of computers.
- To help develop and understand the symbolism and use of formula in mathematics.
- To develop an ability in problem solving.
- To develop mental mathematical skills.
- To encourage pupils to work both cooperatively and in an independent way.
- To develop a proficiency in aural mathematics.
- To encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning.
